Social Justice Ministry News

Granite Peak is committed to organizing a Social Justice Ministry that will:

Strive to get at the root causes of injustice, as well as direct service work;

Develop connections with the local community and neighborhood so we would know our neighbors and work together for justice issues;

Develop relationships with local faith based groups, schools, businesses and institutions to form a strong cohort working for justice in the larger community:

Actively support the developing state-wide UU justice advocacy network so that Arizona congregations can work together on broad based issues.

Climate Action: Tweaking Our Economy By Putting a Price on Carbon

If you’re concerned about climate change and holes in our market based economic system, and like bipartisan solutions, consider attending the “Climate Action: Tweaking Our Economy By Putting a Price on Carbon” program to be held at Granite Peak UU on Friday, July 20, from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. Sponsored by the Yavapai County Climate Change Coalition, of which Granite Peak UU is a member, the Sierra Club, and Prescott Indivisible.

The program will be moderated by GPUUC’s own Stephen Cook. After briefly overviewing what scientists and economists tell us regarding the need for market-based climate action, he’ll introduce the featured speaker: Prescott’s own Sierra Cottle. Having recently returned from a Washington DC policy camp and conference, she will focus on the carbon fee & dividend plan, which the Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL) sees as the best bipartisan solution to mitigating climate change.

Following up Sierra’s presentation, Flagstaff’s Shawn Newell will briefly report on how respectful persistence paid off for her CCL chapter, as Flagstaff became Arizona’s first city to urge Congress to pass national revenue-neutral carbon fee and dividend legislation. The evening event will conclude with a question and answer / discussion session. This free of charge program is open to the public.

Justice Vespers Service

Wednesday March 15th 5:30-6:30

GPUUC Sanctuary

(Every third Monday of the month)

These are trying times for those of us who are concerned about and working for justice. Many of us are involved in meetings, organizing and protesting for human rights and the protections of our freedoms. All this work can be exhausting and sometimes discouraging. In these moments it can be more important than ever to come together in community for healing and rejuvenation.  The service is a time for us to gather together for sustenance, support and to help renew our spirit of hope. There will be short readings, inspirational music, time to share and silent meditation. Everyone is invited to attend.
